The ancient Astiki Odos and the Metro beneath Vouliagmenis avenue (Konstantina Kaza-Papageorgiou)

An interactive event based on the book The ancient Astiki Odos and the Metro beneath Vouliagmenis Αvenue (Kapon Editions). The excavator and author of the book, Konstantina Kaza-Papageorgiou, will guide us through characteristic antiquities that came to light in private lots, as well as during the expansion of underground Line 2 of the METRO to the southern areas of Athens, and are preserved in the area of the municipality of Alimos.

Our meeting point will be Rachel’s Bookstore (22 Ploutarchou Str.). There, Mrs Kaza-Papageorgiou will give us a short PowerPoint presentation of the excavations and the history of the Ancient Astiki Odos (city road).

Afterwards, a bus will be provided for our transportation to the area of Alimos, where we will walk through the preserved antiquities as following:

– A guide through the Mycenaean settlement at the site of Kontopigado as well as through the Mycenaean manufacturing complex preserved at the surface of the “Alimos” metro station.

– Temple of Zoodochos Pigi and a guide through the remains of the early Christian basilika.

– A walk through the ancient theater of Euonymon, located at the Ancient Theater Street. Visit to the well, located at the east of the theater. Concise introduction to the history of the ancient demos (municipality) of Euonymon and the Trachones estate.

– Kontellis building (former Sprider) Visit to the section of the ancient Astiki Odos preserved in situ under a glass ceiling inside and adjacent to the building. The tour will conclude at the near-by café, and we will return to the metro station.
